About My Work
Urban India produces over 120,000 tons of garbage a day and this number is growing at 10% per year. (World Bank) Currently, this is a $625 million yearly market predicated on municipal contracts for simply hauling and dumping waste. Payment is many times acquired on kickbacks of an average 10 – 15%, for which government officials allow poor service while allocating 10-20% of municipal budgets for waste management. (World Bank) Lack of accountability for service levels result in as much as 40% of raw waste being left uncollected. This festering garbage is directly linked to the spread of vector-born diseases, the contamination of water supplies, and the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The only processing is done by waste pickers who sell recyclables at the cost of their health and dignity, earning a mere 70 Rs a day. Many waste pickers are children whose additional income is required to support their families, often preventing them from attending school, and continuing the cycle of poverty.

Smaller cities suffer most as little technical resource, finance, or even contractors are present to collect or process waste. The objective of Waste Ventures India (WVI) is to create waste picker enterprises that offer excellent service with monetary incentives to separate waste. The local (soil, water) and global (greenhouse gases) environments benefit, as well as the municipalities, and the waste pickers. Neighborhoods are cleaner and landfills are smaller. Waste pickers can climb out of the cycle of poverty and earn the respect and money they deserve. Most importantly, WVI makes environmentally processing waste more lucrative while also de-risking the system by not requiring municipal operational financing – working with a nonprofit partner to disseminate learnings and encourage other waste management companies and investors to adopt and execute its model.
